Yarn substitution

Stylecraft Special DK alternatives: 8 yarns compared

The closest Stylecraft Special DK alternatives on paper are Yarnsmiths Create DK and James C Brett Top Value DK: both 100% acrylic, 290m per 100g against Special DK’s 295m, with the same 4mm hook and 22-stitch label tension. King Cole Big Value DK matches them on length in 50g balls, and Hayfield Bonus DK, King Cole Pricewise DK and Paintbox Simply DK are a little shorter. We compared the labels of eight acrylic and acrylic-blend DKs with Special DK on 2 October 2026, then worked out what each costs and how many balls it takes for the same length of yarn. The short version: tension and hook barely differ, but the few metres missing from each ball can add a whole ball or two to a big project.

The closest matches, label by label

The table sets each yarn’s label against Special DK’s. We used the maker’s own page where it gave the figure. King Cole’s pages give length, fibre and needle size but no tension, and Wool Warehouse lists Yarnsmiths Create DK as its own yarn, so those tension figures come from shop listings. Paintbox Yarns’ site returned an error, so its figures are from LoveCrafts, which sells the brand; an archived copy of the Paintbox page from December 2023 gives the same length, hook and tension. Every figure was checked on 2 October 2026.

Six of the eight are 100% acrylic DKs between 276m and 290m per 100g, on a 4mm hook with a knitted tension of 22 stitches to 10cm. That is the same hook and stitch count as Special DK. The two that come out longer than Special DK, Stylecraft Life DK at 298m and Scheepjes Colour Crafter at 300m, are also the two that differ in other ways: Life DK is 25% wool, and Colour Crafter gives a looser tension of 20 stitches.

A few metres per ball add up

Six of the alternatives are between 1.7% and 6.4% shorter per 100g than Special DK. That sounds small, but patterns give whole balls. A pattern that asks for one ball of Special DK in a colour is asking for up to 295m, and a 276m ball of Simply DK is 19m short of that. If the designer’s ball was nearly used up, you need a second ball of that colour.

Across a big project the gap grows. Attic24’s Cosy Stripe blanket asks for 15 balls of Special DK, which is 4,425m. Treated as one length, that is 16 balls of Create DK, Top Value DK, Pricewise DK or Bonus DK, and 17 of Simply DK, because 4,425 ÷ 276 = 16.03. Cosy Stripe is a multicolour stripe, though, and each colour has to be rounded up on its own, so a striped version can need more balls than that. The rule from our substitution guide holds: convert the pattern to metres, divide by the new ball’s length, and round up for each colour.

What 1,800m costs in each yarn

We used 1,800m because it is about one square metre of DK blanket at the low end of our blanket guide, where published DK patterns used 1,780 to 2,530m per square metre. That is roughly a 100 × 100cm blanket in a stitch as economical as the corner-to-corner pattern in that guide. At 1,800m, Special DK needs 7 balls, since 1,800 ÷ 295 = 6.10.

Every yarn in the table also needs 7 balls of 100g (or 13 of King Cole Big Value’s 50g), except Colour Crafter, where 6 balls give exactly 1,800m with nothing to spare. So at this size the length gap costs nothing extra, and the price per ball decides. Hayfield Bonus DK from The Wool Factory and Simply DK on sale at LoveCrafts came to £11.83 for 7 balls, against £16.45 for Special DK at Wool Warehouse or LoveCrafts. Prices were checked on 2 October 2026, are for single balls before delivery, and several were sale prices that can end without notice. For delivery charges and more yarns, see our cheapest DK guide.

Tension and hook: where the labels differ

Every yarn here is listed for a 4mm hook and 4mm needles, the same as Special DK, though for five of them the hook size comes from shop listings rather than the maker. The tension on a yarn label is a knitted one, though, worked on 4mm needles. None of the pages we checked gives a crochet tension, so the label tells you the yarns are about the same thickness, not that your trebles (US double crochet) will come out the same size.

Special DK, Life DK and Simply DK give 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm. Create DK, Top Value DK, Bonus DK and both King Cole yarns give 22 stitches and 28 rows. Shops don’t always agree with the maker: LoveCrafts lists Top Value DK at 30 rows, while James C Brett’s own page says 28. Colour Crafter is the outlier at 20 stitches and 24 rows, which suggests a slightly thicker yarn even though it has more metres per 100g.

Two stitches in 22 is about 9%. If your crochet differed by the same proportion, a 120cm-wide blanket would come out about 11cm narrower or wider, so make a tension square in the pattern’s stitch before you buy Colour Crafter in quantity.

Matching Special DK shades

Special DK has 125 shades. The alternatives range from 47 (Life DK) to 120 (Create DK), so most have fewer to choose from. We didn’t find a maker or shop page that lists exact shade-for-shade matches to Special DK, and we don’t claim any here.

Shade names overlap a lot, but a shared name is not a match. On Wool Warehouse’s shade lists, 19 Create DK shades share a name with a Special DK shade, as do 18 Bonus DK, 21 Big Value DK and 22 Pricewise DK shades. Silver, for example, is 1203 in Special DK, 3030 in Create DK, 4057 in Big Value DK and 3101 in Pricewise DK. Blush is 1833, 3062, 4058 and 149. These are different makers’ colours, and none of them says its shade matches Special DK’s.

If you are replacing one colour in a Special DK palette, order a single ball first and check it in daylight next to the rest. If you are replacing a whole palette, picking every colour from one range avoids mixing two makers’ ideas of the same colour. Our colour chart lists all 125 Special DK shade codes and names if you need to note what you are replacing.

When the dearer options make sense

Stylecraft Life DK is the nearest in length at 298m and shares Special DK’s 22-stitch, 30-row tension, but it is 75% acrylic and 25% wool in the plain shades and cost £3.65 a ball at LoveCrafts, against £2.35 for Special DK. It suits a pattern where you want some wool in the fabric. Stylecraft lists Life DK at a 40°C wash, against 30°C for Special DK.

Scheepjes Colour Crafter has the most metres per ball of the group, 300m, and 93 shades. It was £3.60 at Wool Warehouse. Its looser label tension is the reason to swatch before swapping it into a Special DK pattern.

Swapping without running short

Start from metres. Multiply the pattern’s ball count by 295 for each colour, divide by the new yarn’s metres per ball, and round up. King Cole Big Value DK comes in 50g balls of 145m, which works out the same per 100g as Create DK and helps when a colour needs only a little more than one 100g ball.

Then check tension with a square in the pattern’s stitch, and buy each colour from one dye lot. The cost comparison tool takes each yarn’s ball price, metres and delivery charge so you can compare whole orders, not single balls. These are label figures and designers’ quantities; HazelLoop hasn’t crocheted each yarn side by side.

Common questions

What is the best alternative to Stylecraft Special DK?

On the label, Yarnsmiths Create DK and James C Brett Top Value DK are closest: 100% acrylic, 290m per 100g against 295m, 4mm hook and 22 stitches to 10cm. On 2 October 2026 they were £1.79 and £1.95 a ball on sale, against £2.35 for Special DK.

Is Yarnsmiths Create DK the same as Stylecraft Special DK?

No. It’s Wool Warehouse’s own yarn. The labels are very close, 290m against 295m per 100g, same hook and stitch count, but Create DK lists 28 rows to 10cm against 30. Some shades share names with Special DK shades, which doesn’t make them the same colour.

King Cole Big Value DK vs Stylecraft Special DK: which goes further?

Special DK, slightly. Big Value DK comes in 50g balls of 145m, which is 290m per 100g against 295m. A 15-ball Special DK pattern (4,425m) needs 31 balls of Big Value DK, or 1,550g.

Can I use Hayfield Bonus DK instead of Stylecraft Special DK?

Usually, yes: both are 100% acrylic with a 4mm hook and 22 stitches to 10cm. Bonus DK has 280m per 100g, so a 15-ball Special DK pattern needs 16 balls. Make a tension square first.

Do any yarns match Stylecraft Special DK colours exactly?

We didn’t find a maker or shop that publishes exact matches. Many shade names are shared, such as Silver and Blush, but none of the makers says its shade matches Special DK’s, so compare a ball in daylight before buying a full set.
