Cheapest DK yarn in the UK: price per 100m compared
On 1 October 2026 the cheapest DK yarn we found in the UK was Knitco DK at The Wool Factory, at 41p per 100m (£1.49 for 100g and 360m). Stylecraft Special DK, the yarn most UK crocheters price against, was 80p per 100m at Wool Warehouse and LoveCrafts. We priced 31 DK yarns at six UK shops and ranked them by cost per 100 metres, not per 100 grams. That changes the order, and it’s the number that tells you what a project will cost.
The cheapest DK yarns, ranked by price per 100m
The table lists 31 DK yarns sold by Wool Warehouse, LoveCrafts, The Wool Factory, Mill Outlets, Hobbii UK and Hobbycraft. Each price is the one shown on the shop’s own product page on 1 October 2026, for a single ball, before delivery and before any multi-buy discount. We left out Amazon, where the price depends on the seller. Hobbii doesn’t use the name DK, so we included its yarns listed as Light, the Craft Yarn Council category that covers DK.
Price per 100m is the ball price divided by the metres on the ball band, times 100. Where a shop listed a different length for the same yarn, we used the figure most shops agreed on: 282m for King Cole Pricewise DK (Mill Outlets says 290m) and 100m for Drops Cotton Light (The Wool Factory says 105m).
Prices marked sale were reductions on the day. Wool Warehouse had Yarnsmiths Create DK at £1.79, down from £2.35, and LoveCrafts had Paintbox Yarns Simply DK at £1.69, down from £2.60. Hobbii had Amigo at half price, and all four Mill Outlets prices in the table were marked as sale prices. Sale prices can end without notice, so check before you order.

Why price per 100g gives the wrong answer
Most price lists compare yarn per 100g. That works only if every yarn has the same length per gram, and DK yarns don’t. In our sample, a 100g ball held anywhere from 150m to 360m.
James C Brett Craft Cotton costs £1.69 per 100g at Wool Warehouse, which looks cheaper than Stylecraft Special DK at £2.35. But the cotton has 150m per 100g against 295m, so per 100m it is £1.13 against 80p. Special DK is the cheaper yarn to crochet with. Knitco Good Old Fashioned DK is the cheapest per 100g at £1.20, yet Knitco DK costs less per metre because each ball holds 360m instead of 280m.
A long ball for its weight usually means a thinner yarn. Knitco DK and Yarnsmiths Play DK both hold 360m per 100g, compared with 295m for Special DK. Knitco DK lists the same tension as Special DK, 22 stitches over 10cm on 4mm needles, but it may still crochet up lighter and thinner. Make a swatch before you swap it into a pattern written for another yarn.
The same yarn costs more at some shops
The same ball can cost a lot more at one shop than another. Hayfield Bonus DK was £1.69 at The Wool Factory, £1.91 at LoveCrafts and £2.49 at Wool Warehouse. Cygnet Pure Wool Superwash DK was £1.99 at The Wool Factory and £3.19 at Wool Warehouse. King Cole Majestic DK was £1.49 at The Wool Factory against £2.99 at Wool Warehouse.
Stylecraft Highland Heathers DK showed the widest spread: £3.25 at LoveCrafts, £3.39 at Wool Warehouse and £5.50 at Hobbycraft for the same 100g, 272m ball. Stylecraft Special DK was £2.35 at both Wool Warehouse and LoveCrafts.
Cheap listings sometimes have fewer shades in stock. At Mill Outlets, King Cole Big Value DK 50g had 6 of its 12 listed shades available, and King Cole Pricewise DK had 10 of 26. Check your colour before you plan around the lowest price.
Cheapest cotton and wool DK
Cotton DK costs more per metre than acrylic, partly because cotton is heavier for its length. The cheapest we found was Drops Cotton Light at 99p per 100m (The Wool Factory, 99p for 50g), but it is half cotton and half polyester. For 100% cotton, Yarnsmiths Cotton DK on sale at Wool Warehouse (£1.12 per 100m) and James C Brett Craft Cotton (£1.13) came lowest. James C Brett It’s Pure Cotton was cheapest at Mill Outlets, £2.85 on sale against £3.39 and £3.49 elsewhere.
For wool, the cheapest blend per metre was Stylecraft Life DK at £1.22 per 100m (LoveCrafts), which is 25% wool. Eight of its shades were on sale there at £3.10, or £1.04 per 100m. King Cole Majestic DK, 50% wool, was close behind at £1.23 on The Wool Factory’s price. The cheapest 100% wool DK in our list was Cygnet Pure Wool Superwash DK at £1.91 per 100m from The Wool Factory.
Cheapest for a single-bed blanket
Our blanket guide found that published DK blanket patterns use 1,780 to 2,530 metres of yarn per square metre. A single-bed blanket of 120 × 175cm covers 2.1 square metres, so it needs 3,738 to 5,313 metres. These figures come from designers’ own quantities. HazelLoop hasn’t made these blankets in each yarn.
The table below turns that range into whole balls of one colour, bought from the cheapest shop for each yarn, with standard UK delivery added when the order is under the shop’s free-delivery threshold. Knitco DK comes out at £20.34 to £26.30 delivered from The Wool Factory, against £30.55 to £44.65 for Stylecraft Special DK from Wool Warehouse.
These totals leave out LoveCrafts’ multi-buy discount, explained below. Where your shade qualifies, 19 balls of Special DK there come to about £40.19 with 10% off and free delivery, under Wool Warehouse’s £44.65, and 14 to 20 balls of Simply DK to about £24.79 to £33.08 delivered. The pattern range was worked out from blankets in Stylecraft Special DK. A thinner yarn such as Knitco DK may give a lighter, more open blanket from the same metres, so weigh a swatch to check before ordering. A striped blanket also needs each colour rounded up separately, which adds balls.

Delivery and multi-buy discounts change the total
Standard UK delivery on 1 October 2026: The Wool Factory £3.95, free over £50; Wool Warehouse £3.45, free over £30; LoveCrafts £3.50, free over £40; Mill Outlets £3.95, free over £40; Hobbii from £3.99, free from £29.99; Hobbycraft £4.95, free over £25. A small order from the cheapest shop can end up dearer than one from a shop with a lower threshold.
LoveCrafts takes a percentage off 10, 20 or 30 balls of the same colour, and the rate depends on the yarn and on whether it’s on sale. Full-price Stylecraft Special DK and Stylecraft Life DK had 10%, 15% and 20% off. Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, on sale, had 10%, 12.5% and 15%, and Hayfield Bonus DK, also on sale, 5%, 7.5% and 10%. The offer wasn’t shown on shades with little stock. Hobbycraft had 3 for 2 on selected Women’s Institute yarn, which brings That’s So Cotton DK down to £3.20 a ball, or £1.52 per 100m, if you buy in threes.

Before you switch to a cheaper yarn
Check the metres per 100g and the suggested hook or needle size against the yarn in your pattern. A yarn with a similar length per gram and the same tension is the safest swap. Acrylic, cotton and wool also behave differently: cotton has less stretch and weighs more, so a cotton blanket will be heavier than an acrylic one of the same size.
Buy all of one colour from one order if you can, so the dye lot matches.

Of the 31 we checked on 1 October 2026, Knitco DK at The Wool Factory was cheapest per metre: £1.49 for 100g and 360m, or 41p per 100m. Knitco Good Old Fashioned DK was cheapest per ball at £1.20 for 280m, or 43p per 100m.
Where is Stylecraft Special DK cheapest?
On 1 October 2026 it was £2.35 a ball at both Wool Warehouse and LoveCrafts, or 80p per 100m. Wool Warehouse delivers free over £30 and LoveCrafts over £40, and LoveCrafts took 10% off 10 or more balls of one colour, rising to 15% at 20 and 20% at 30.
What is the cheapest DK cotton yarn?
Drops Cotton Light at 99p per 100m from The Wool Factory, though it is 50% polyester. For 100% cotton, Yarnsmiths Cotton DK on sale at Wool Warehouse and James C Brett Craft Cotton were both about £1.12 to £1.13 per 100m.
Is cheap acrylic DK good enough for a blanket?
Cheap acrylic DK is widely used for blankets because it washes and dries easily. Check that its metres per 100g and tension are close to your pattern’s yarn, and crochet a swatch first if it’s a lot thinner.
How much does a single bed blanket in DK cost?
Using 3,738 to 5,313 metres for 120 × 175cm, about £20 to £26 delivered in Knitco DK and £31 to £45 in Stylecraft Special DK, at prices seen on 1 October 2026, before any multi-buy discount.
