How much yarn for a C2C blanket? Tiles and balls by size

A single-bed corner-to-corner (C2C) blanket of about 120 × 175cm has roughly 5,300 tiles in aran or 6,900 in DK, and needs about 14 to 19 balls of Stylecraft Special Aran or 13 to 19 of Special DK. We got there from 19 published C2C blankets that state a grid size, a finished size and a yarn quantity. Most are US patterns in aran or worsted-weight yarn, and in those, on a 5 to 5.5mm hook, a tile came out at about 2cm across and used about 0.6 metres of yarn. We found far fewer usable DK patterns, so the DK figures are rougher.

The quick answer, by blanket size

Find the size closest to yours. The tile counts assume a 2cm tile in aran and a 1.75cm tile in DK. The aran figure is the middle of 11 patterns, but the DK one comes from a single Bernat pattern, so check either against your own swatch. The ball ranges come from the metres per square metre that published C2C patterns ask for.

The sizes are the same ones we use in our general blanket guide, so you can compare C2C with other stitches directly. If your graph is already drawn, count its squares instead: one square on the graph is one tile.

Tiles and 100g balls for a C2C blanket by size. Tiles = width and length ÷ tile size (2cm in aran, the median of 11 aran and worsted patterns on 5 to 5.5mm hooks; 1.75cm in DK, from a single pattern, Bernat’s Softee Baby afghan on a 4mm hook). Aran balls = area × 1,280 to 1,740m per m², the spread of seven of the eight stated-length aran and worsted patterns. DK balls = area × 1,780 to 2,570m per m², from only two DK blankets, both quoted in whole balls. Rounded up. Compiled 2 October 2026.

What a C2C tile is made of

Each tile is a small block of three trebles (US double crochet) sitting next to a chain-3 space. You work it diagonally: start with one tile in a corner, add a tile at the start of every row until the blanket is as wide as you want, then take one away each row until you reach the far corner. Sarah Maker’s C2C tutorial and the Yarnspirations graph patterns we read all describe it this way.

Some designers use half trebles (US half double crochet) instead. Repeat Crafter Me says she works her C2C squares this way because it makes the pixels a little more compact. Lion Brand’s Leopard Print baby blanket uses half treble tiles in DK and gives one tile as about 1.5cm. Smaller tiles mean more tiles for the same blanket, so check which version your pattern uses before you count.

Where the numbers come from

We read 19 C2C blanket patterns from Yarnspirations (Caron, Red Heart and Bernat), Lion Brand, Hooked Hazel, B.Hooked Crochet, Annie Design Crochet and My Poppet. Each one gives the grid in tiles, or row counts we could turn into a grid, plus a finished size and a yarn amount. We divided the yarn by the number of tiles and by the area. HazelLoop hasn’t made these blankets; the quantities are the designers’ own and every pattern is linked below.

Two kinds of quantity are mixed in the table. Some patterns give the length actually needed, such as 2,288 yards. Others only give whole balls to buy, which always leaves some over. Several finished sizes also include an edging, tassels or pompoms, which makes both the tile size and the per-tile figures come out a little high. Baby Brights shows this most: its tension square gives a 1.7cm tile, but a wide border takes the blanket to 98cm across.

What 19 published C2C blankets use. Tiles across × down as stated or counted from the written rows; tile = finished size ÷ tiles, averaged over both sides, so any edging makes it a little large; yards converted at 0.9144m; grams from each yarn’s ball weight. Most are US patterns. Treble tiles unless noted. Checked 2 October 2026.

About 60 metres per 100 tiles in aran

Take the eight aran and worsted patterns that state a length rather than a ball count. Their metres per tile run from 0.30 to 0.67, and the middle value is about 0.6. In weight, that’s about 0.36g a tile, or roughly 280 tiles from a 100g ball.

Tile size changes this a lot. Lion Brand’s Spring Bloom and Stay Wild patterns use aran-weight yarn on a 4mm hook and get tiles of only 1.2 to 1.3cm. Bernat’s super chunky Menorah and Meadow Magic blankets on an 8mm hook have tiles of about 3.6cm, and each tile takes 0.9 to 1 metre. So a tile count only turns into yarn once you know how big your tiles are.

Does C2C use more yarn than other blankets?

Not by much. Seven of the eight aran and worsted C2C patterns that state a length come out at 1,280 to 1,740 metres per square metre. The eighth, Hooked Hazel’s Fractal Throw, is far lower at about 740. The plain aran blankets in our general blanket guide used 1,110 to 1,570, so C2C sits level with them or a little above. In DK, Diana Bensted’s Jewel C2C kit from Wool Zone has nine 100g balls of Stylecraft Special DK, one per colour, for 115 × 130cm, or about 1,780 metres per square metre. That’s at the low end of the 1,780 to 2,530 range we found for other DK blankets.

The Crochet Crowd lists actual usage for medium-weight baby blankets. Its corner-to-corner blanket of 34 × 34 inches takes 812 yards, the same as its basic square blanket of 35 × 35 inches. That’s about 1,000 metres per square metre, at the low end of the patterns above. C2C behaves much like any other solid treble fabric.

Colour changes, bobbins and whole balls

Graph patterns tell you to wind small balls or bobbins, one for each separate area of colour. Hooked on Homemade Happiness and the Yarnspirations patterns both say this, and Sarah Maker suggests carrying a colour only across one or two tiles. None of the patterns we read put a percentage on the yarn that colour changes use, so we haven’t added one.

What we can see is how far figures move even without that. Caron’s Pretty Florals and Popping Florals share the same 60 × 72 grid, yarn, hook and finished size, yet ask for 2,288 and 2,743 yards, about 20% apart. And rounding up to whole balls weighs heavily on small blankets: Lion Brand’s Stay Wild Ocean Child lists eleven 100g balls across six colours for a 68.5 × 94cm blanket, which works out at 3,400 metres per square metre.

Work out your own tile count and yarn

Make a square of 10 × 10 tiles in your yarn and hook, measure one side and weigh it. Divide the side by 10 for your tile size, then divide your blanket’s width and length by that to get tiles across and down. Divide the swatch weight by 100 for grams per tile.

Say the swatch measures 20cm and weighs 30g. That’s a 2cm tile and 0.3g a tile. A single-bed blanket of 120 × 175cm is then 60 × 88 tiles, or 5,280. At 0.3g each, that’s 1,584g, so 16 balls of 100g. Add your edging separately.

Turn the graph into a shopping list

Put your picture or graph into the C2C graph maker. It counts the tiles in each colour and gives yarn per colour from your metres per tile. Round each colour up to whole balls on its own, because a colour that needs a third of a ball still means buying a ball.

Buy the background colour in one go so the dye lot matches, as it usually covers the most tiles. Then compare single balls with packs before you order.

Check before you move on

  • Tile type checked: treble or half treble
  • Tile size measured from a 10 × 10 tile swatch
  • Tiles across and down worked out for your finished size
  • Grams or metres per tile taken from the weighed swatch
  • Edging yarn counted separately
  • Each colour rounded up to whole balls on its own

Common questions

How many C2C tiles for a single bed blanket?

For about 120 × 175cm, roughly 60 × 88 tiles (5,280) with 2cm aran tiles, or 69 × 100 (6,900) with 1.75cm DK tiles. Measure a swatch first, because tile size varies from about 1.2cm to over 2cm in the aran patterns we checked.

How much yarn does one C2C tile use?

In aran or worsted on a 5 to 5.5mm hook, about 0.6 metres or 0.36g in the patterns that state a length. That’s about 60 metres per 100 tiles. Super chunky tiles on an 8mm hook used 0.9 to 1 metre each.

Does corner to corner crochet use a lot of yarn?

About the same as other solid blankets, or a little more. Seven of the eight aran C2C patterns that state a length came out at 1,280 to 1,740 metres per square metre, against 1,110 to 1,570 for the plain aran blankets in our general guide.

How many balls of Stylecraft Special DK for a C2C blanket?

Roughly 13 to 19 for a single bed, 8 to 12 for a lap throw and 4 to 6 for a pram blanket, by the ranges above. Treat these loosely, because only two DK C2C blankets gave usable figures. The Jewel C2C kit uses nine balls for 115 × 130cm.
