Blanket sizes

Crochet blanket sizes UK: a chart from real patterns

In published UK patterns, a crochet baby blanket is usually about 66 × 80cm, a lap blanket about 97 × 126cm and a throw about 126 × 166cm. The four single-bed blankets we found are all by one designer, Attic24, and come out at about 120 × 180cm. Those are medians from 35 sizes in 32 patterns by UK designers and brands, set beside UK mattress sizes from Which?, John Lewis, Dunelm, IKEA UK and Silentnight. Apart from one throw that its designer says also fits a double, we found no pattern with a stated size made for a bed bigger than a single, and designers don’t agree on what a bed-size blanket should cover.

UK crochet blanket size chart

Find your blanket in the first column. The middle columns show what designers actually make: the median width and length, the range, and how many pattern sizes sit behind each row. The medians are worked out for width and length separately, so they describe a typical shape rather than one particular pattern. Three rows rest on one designer or brand each, and the table says so.

The last column gives 100g balls of Stylecraft Special DK and Special Aran from our blanket and baby blanket yarn guides, for the nearest size they cover. For a 76cm pram blanket the two guides differ slightly, so both figures are shown. Where a row has no published patterns, we’ve left the designer columns empty rather than guess.

UK mattress sizes, and where the sources disagree

For adult beds the sources agree on almost everything. Single is 90 × 190cm, small double 120 × 190cm, double 135 × 190cm, king 150 × 200cm and super king 180 × 200cm at Which?, John Lewis, Dunelm, IKEA UK and Silentnight. Cot and cot bed mattresses are 60 × 120cm and 70 × 140cm at both Mamas & Papas and Obaby.

Small single is the odd one out. Which? and John Lewis give 75 × 190cm and Dunelm gives 2ft 6in × 6ft 3in, but IKEA UK sells its small single at 80 × 200cm, for day beds and extendable children’s beds. John Lewis’s bed linen guide lists king sheets for a 150 × 190cm mattress, while its own mattress guide says 150 × 200cm. If you’re making a blanket for a particular bed, measure that mattress.

What designers mean by single bed size

Attic24 calls four of her blankets single bed size, and they come out at 110 to 120cm wide and 175 to 180cm long (Summer Ripple’s cotton version is a little shorter, at 170cm). They are the only single-bed sizes we found, so that row reflects one designer’s habit rather than a standard. On a 90 × 190cm single mattress, her blankets reach 10 to 15cm over each side and stop 10 to 15cm short of the full length.

Jera’s Jamboree’s Fireside Plaid is a throw of 60 × 58 inches (about 152 × 147cm) that she says is right for the couch and also fits a double bed. Across a 135cm double mattress that leaves about 9cm each side, but it is well short of the 190cm length. So when a pattern says it fits a bed, check whether it means the width, the length or both.

Drop: how much wider than the mattress

A UK duvet gives a useful benchmark. Dunelm and John Lewis list the same duvet sizes for single (135 × 200cm), double (200 × 200cm), king (230 × 220cm) and super king (260 × 220cm). They differ only on small double: 175 × 200cm at Dunelm, 200 × 200cm at John Lewis. Against the mattress, that’s 22.5cm over each side on a single, 32.5cm on a double and 40cm on a king or super king.

The bedspread charts we found from UK designers use American bed sizes. Catherine Crochets gives a twin blanket as 66 × 90 inches for a 39 × 75 inch mattress, which is about 34cm over each side and 38cm extra length. Her king blanket, 108 × 100 inches for a 76 × 80 inch mattress, adds about 41cm each side and 51cm in length. The size table on Jera’s Fireside Plaid page uses the same blanket sizes, but her chunky blanket guide lists a bigger double, 229 × 274cm against 203 × 229cm.

If you want that American-style drop on a UK single, the arithmetic is 90 + 34 + 34 = about 160cm wide and 190 + 38 = about 230cm long. To set your own, measure from the mattress edge to where you want the blanket to stop, then add it to both sides of the width and to the foot end of the length.

Throws come out longer than you might expect

The 10 throw sizes we counted have a median of 126 × 166cm, with lengths from 137 to 192cm. That’s longer than the 127 × 152cm sofa throw in our yarn guide, so if you’re matching a longer pattern such as Paintbox Yarns’ Comedy Cover (131 × 185cm) or Catherine Crochets’ Easy Moss Stitch (120 × 192cm), work the yarn out from the area with the metres-per-square-metre figures in that guide, rather than the sofa throw row.

Lap blankets are a little more consistent. The eight we found are 80 to 125cm wide, with a median of 97 × 126cm, close to the 102 × 127cm lap throw in our yarn guide. Catherine Crochets puts a lap blanket at around 50 × 60 inches and a throw for the foot of a bed at 50 × 70 inches.

Baby blankets are shorter than a cot mattress

The nine baby blankets run from 54 × 78cm (Paintbox Yarns’ cotton Baby Blanket) and 60cm square (Round and Round) up to 91cm square (Catherine Crochets’ Cara), with a median of 66 × 80cm. A cot mattress is 60 × 120cm and a cot bed 70 × 140cm, so all nine are shorter than a cot mattress.

Only two patterns with a stated size are labelled for a cot or a toddler, both by Bella Coco: the Moss Blanket, 99 × 114cm, which she says is “perfect for a lap blanket or a cot blanket”, and the toddler size of Circle of Hope, 104 × 117cm. Both are wider than a cot bed mattress, so treat that row as two examples, not a standard. Our baby blanket guide covers Moses basket and pram sizes and the yarn for each in more detail.

Where the numbers come from

We opened each pattern page and took the finished size the designer or brand gives, and the use they describe it for. Inches are converted at 2.54cm and rounded. LoveCrafts adds a long product description to many listings that reads as machine-written. Where the only “throw” label came from that text, we list the blanket but leave it out of the medians, and the table says so. We haven’t made these blankets ourselves: the sizes are the designers’ own, and every page is linked below.

Two patterns appear more than once because they come in several sizes. Bella Coco’s Circle of Hope gives baby, toddler and two throw sizes, and Paintbox Yarns’ Amour gives small and large. We found no published pattern sized and labelled as a blanket for a small double, double, king or super king, so those rows are empty. Fireside Plaid, which its designer says fits a double, is sized and sold as a throw, so it sits with the throws. We left out a King Cole leaflet whose LoveCrafts listing gives two different sizes for the small blanket.

From finished size to starting chain

Once you’ve picked a width, the starting chain depends on your tension, not the blanket type. For a 120cm single-bed blanket in DK treble (US double crochet), the tensions in the patterns behind our chain guide work out at 156 to 216 stitches across.

Make a 10cm swatch, count the stitches, then put the width and your stitch count into the foundation chain calculator. If you’re using squares instead, the granny square guide gives square counts for the same six sizes as our yarn guide.

Check before you move on

  • Mattress measured, not assumed, especially for a small single or an IKEA bed
  • Decided whether the blanket sits on top of the bed or hangs over the sides
  • Drop measured from the mattress edge and added to both sides and the foot end
  • Length checked against the pattern, as throws vary from 137 to 192cm
  • Tension swatch made before working out the starting chain
  • Yarn worked out for your final size, including the border

Common questions

What size is a single bed crochet blanket in the UK?

The only single-bed patterns we found are four by Attic24, all 110 to 120cm wide and 175 to 180cm long, a median of 120 × 180cm. That’s one designer, not a standard, but it covers the top of a 90 × 190cm single mattress with 10 to 15cm over each side. A single duvet at Dunelm and John Lewis is 135 × 200cm, if you want it to hang down more like a duvet.

What size is a crochet throw?

The 10 throw sizes we counted have a median of 126 × 166cm, but widths run from 78 to 155cm and lengths from 137 to 192cm. Lap blankets are smaller, at a median of 97 × 126cm.

What size should a crochet blanket be for a double bed?

We found no published UK pattern sized and labelled as a double-bed blanket. A UK double mattress is 135 × 190cm and a double duvet is 200 × 200cm, so somewhere between those two, depending on how far you want it to hang. Catherine Crochets suggests something as large as 100 × 100 inches (254cm square) for a throw to cover a double or king size bed. Jera’s Jamboree says her 152 × 147cm Fireside Plaid throw also fits a double, which works across the width but not the length.

What size is a crochet baby blanket?

The nine baby blankets we found have a median of 66 × 80cm, ranging from 54 × 78cm to 91cm square. A cot mattress is 60 × 120cm, so all of them are shorter than the cot.

Is a UK small single 75cm or 80cm wide?

Which? and John Lewis give 75 × 190cm, and Dunelm gives the same size in feet, 2ft 6in × 6ft 3in. IKEA UK’s small single is 80 × 200cm. Measure the mattress if the blanket needs to fit closely.
