How it works
The picture is shrunk to one pixel per tile, then the colours are grouped into the number you choose and each group is matched to the nearest Stylecraft Special DK shade (check that a shade is also made in Special Aran if you use aran) by eye-weighted colour distance (CIE Lab). No two groups get the same shade. You can swap any shade in the table and the graph updates. Screen colours are approximate, taken from Stylecraft’s shade photos.
Yarn per tile
From 8 published aran and worsted C2C blankets that state a yarn length (Caron, Red Heart, Hooked Hazel, B.Hooked and Annie Design Crochet), the middle figure is about 0.6m per 2cm treble tile, with a range of 0.3 to 0.67m, so weigh a 10 × 10 tile swatch if you can. We found no DK C2C pattern that gives both a grid and a yarn length, so for DK the tool asks for your own figure. Weigh ten of your own tiles for a closer figure: grams × metres per gram on the ball band, divided by ten. Colour changes leave tails, and the margin box covers them along with tension differences. Our guide to how much yarn for a C2C blanket has the published figures by blanket size.
