How the yarn is worked out
Each square uses the metres you enter, or a figure from the preset. The DK preset comes from Simply Yarn’s granny baby blanket, where about 100m of each of 10 colours makes 100 squares of 7.5cm: about 10m per square, or 0.178m per square centimetre. The aran preset comes from B.Hooked’s classic granny, about 70yd (64m) for a 20cm square in medium-weight yarn: 0.16m per cm². Both count the square alone, before joining or border. Our guide to yarn per granny square lists more published squares, and weighing three of your own is more accurate than any preset.
Inside a square, the yarn for each colour band follows its area. With three equal bands, the centre uses 1/9 of the square’s yarn, the middle 3/9 and the outer band 5/9, because each round of a granny is longer than the one before. That’s why the outer colour of each square usually needs the most balls.
Joining and border
Joining and borders vary too much between methods to guess. Enter your own figure for them and choose the colour; if you’re unsure, Attic24’s Harmony blanket, 126 squares joined as you go with an 8-round border, works out at about 40m per square including the join and border, where the DK preset gives about 18m for a 10cm square alone. Plan the border with our granny square blanket guide.
