Douglas temperature blanket 2027

For a DK blanket about 110cm wide in Douglas, plan 8 colours in 2°C steps, from below 6°C to 18°C and above. That’s about 20 balls of a 295m DK such as Stylecraft Special DK, enough in 9 of the last 10 years.

Douglas’s year in numbers

The nearest Met Office station we could use for Douglas is 100km away, so the correction is less local here. Totals still matched within a ball in our checks, but single colours, especially the warmest and coldest, can be one or two balls out. Buy those with a little margin.

Where the numbers come from

For each place we took ten full years of hourly temperatures, 2016 to 2025, from ERA5-Land, a climate reanalysis on a grid of about 9km, and kept the highest value in each UK calendar day. Grid cells run cooler than a thermometer on a lawn, so we corrected every place month by month using the gap between the grid and the three nearest Met Office stations with published monthly averages.

To check the correction we hid each of the 31 stations in turn and predicted its monthly average high from the others. The corrected figures were within 1°C in 78% of 3,720 station-months (typical error 0.6°C), against an average gap of 1.4°C before correction. A single day can still be out by more, so treat the counts as a guide to your year, not a day-by-day record.

We also compared five places with daily records from nearby weather stations (London with Heathrow, Belfast with Aldergrove, Plymouth with Mountbatten, Aberdeen with Dyce and Douglas with Ronaldsway). The total number of balls for a 2°C DK blanket matched within one ball in all five. The grid smooths the hottest days, so single colours at the warm end can come out a little short, most of all on the coast.

“Enough in 9 of 10 years” means the second-highest count of the ten years: in nine of the ten years that colour needed no more days than that.

For Douglas, the grid cell is centred at 54.2°N, 4.5°W, corrected with Valley (100km), Newton Rigg (124km), Armagh (143km).
