Yarn care symbols: what UK ball bands actually say

The symbols on a ball band are the five ISO 3758 care symbols: a wash tub for washing, a triangle for bleach, a square for drying, an iron for ironing and a circle for professional cleaning. Numbers and dots show the maximum heat, bars under a symbol ask for a gentler cycle, and a cross means don’t. We then collected the care line LoveCrafts lists for 86 UK yarns. Acrylics are the easy ones: 25 of 30 can be tumble dried, while none of the 28 wool-rich yarns can.

The five symbols, in words

Every care label uses the same five shapes, usually in this order: washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, then professional cleaning. The symbols belong to GINETEX, the international association for textile care labelling, which co-owns them as trademarks with COFREET. They are the basis of the ISO 3758 standard, whose latest edition came out in 2023. We describe them in words here rather than reproduce the artwork.

Each symbol shows the most you can do, not what you must do. GINETEX says milder treatments and lower temperatures than the label are always allowed. So a 40°C yarn can go in at 30°C, and a tumble-dry yarn can still be dried flat.

Wash tub: numbers, bars and the hand

The number in the tub is the hottest wash in degrees Celsius. One bar under the tub means a mild cycle with less agitation. Two bars mean a very mild cycle, and GINETEX’s own example for that is machine-washable wool. A hand in the tub means hand wash at no more than 40°C. A cross through the tub means don’t wash it at all.

If you see dots inside the tub instead of a number, the label follows the North American system, where one dot is 30°C and two dots are 40°C. Labels made to the ISO system print the number instead. Hand wash really does mean hand wash: clevercare.info, GINETEX’s consumer site, says the delicate machine setting is still too risky for these items and they should never go in the dryer.

Triangle, square, iron and circle

The triangle is bleach. Empty means any bleach, two slanted lines mean oxygen bleach only, and a cross means none. The square is drying. A circle inside it is the tumble dryer: one dot for a mild, cooler setting, two dots for normal heat. Lines inside the square without a circle mean natural drying, on a line or flat. Dry flat is what 19 of the 28 wool-rich yarns in our sample ask for.

One, two and three dots on the iron mean low, moderate and hot. The sources don’t agree on the exact figures. GINETEX gives maximum sole plate temperatures of 120°C, 160°C and 210°C. Wikipedia and Canada’s government guide give 110°C, 150°C and 200°C, and Woolmark gives 150°C for the moderate setting. Treat the dots as low, medium and hot rather than exact numbers. The circle with a letter is for a dry cleaner, not for you. P and F name the solvents the cleaner may use, and W means professional wet cleaning.

What 86 UK yarns say about care

We took the 86 yarns from our hook size guide and opened each LoveCrafts product page on 1 October 2026 to read its care instructions. We haven’t washed these yarns ourselves; the care lines are as the makers and LoveCrafts list them. Of the 86, 52 list a machine wash: 28 at 30°C, 23 at 40°C and one, Scheepjes Cahlista cotton, at 60°C. 13 say hand wash, and 21 give no washing line at all.

Tumble drying splits by fibre more sharply than washing does. 25 of 30 acrylic and synthetic yarns allow it. No wool-rich yarn in the sample does: 20 of 28 say do not tumble dry and the other 8 don’t mention it. Cotton is nearly as strict: 21 of 28 say do not tumble dry and only 3 allow it. Of the 16 wool-rich yarns that allow a machine wash, 14 ask for 30°C and 12 for a delicate cycle. Superwash wool is one route to a machine-washable wool yarn: King Cole describes its Merino Blend DK, made from superwash wool, as machine washable.

Shop listings can leave the wash line out

A missing washing line doesn’t mean the yarn can’t be washed. We checked six of the 21 yarns with no wash line on LoveCrafts against the maker’s own site, and all six are described there as machine washable. Stylecraft lists Special Aran and Special Chunky at 30°C and Life DK at 40°C. King Cole describes Merino Blend DK, Big Value Chunky and Comfort Aran as machine washable.

The two sources don’t always match when both give a figure, either. LoveCrafts lists Stylecraft Special DK as a delicate machine wash at 40°C, while Stylecraft’s own page says machine washable at 30°C. Follow the ball band in your hand, and if you don’t have it, follow the maker: for Special DK that means 30°C. Advice from UKFT, published by GINETEX for the 2021 Brexit changes, says “There is no legal requirement to include care information”, although it adds that a supplier who leaves it out would be responsible for damage if the consumer had used a reasonable cleaning process. So a band without symbols is not unusual, and the maker’s page is the next place to look.

Choosing yarn for a washable baby blanket

For a blanket that will be washed often, look for two things on the band: a machine wash at 30°C or 40°C, and a tumble-dry circle with a dot rather than a cross. Only 15 of our 86 yarns list both, and 12 of those are acrylic, including Stylecraft Special DK, Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, Hayfield Bonus DK and Sirdar Snuggly DK. Paintbox Yarns Baby DK is machine washable at 40°C but says do not tumble dry.

If you mix yarns in one blanket, wash it the way the most delicate yarn asks. Add a wool-rich border to an acrylic blanket and the whole blanket takes on the wool’s care line, which in our sample was most often 30°C and dry flat. Copy the care line onto the gift tag, with the yarn name and shade, so the parents know what to do. Keep one band from each yarn too, because that’s also where the length per ball is printed. Our guide How to read a yarn label before you buy goes through the other lines on a band.

If you’ve lost the band

Look the yarn up on the maker’s site; in our six checks it gave a wash line where the shop listing didn’t. If you don’t know the yarn, wash a swatch the gentlest way, by hand in cool water, and dry it flat. clevercare.info warns that water that’s too hot or a rough spin can shrink delicate fibres such as wool.

To work out how much of an unlabelled leftover ball you have, weigh it and use the grams-to-metres tool with a similar yarn’s length per 100g.

Check before you move on

  • Wash temperature read from the number in the tub, not guessed from the fibre
  • Bars under the tub noted, and a delicate or wool cycle chosen to match
  • Tumble-dry circle checked for a dot or a cross before the first wash
  • Mixed-yarn projects washed to the most delicate yarn’s instructions
  • Care line, yarn name and shade written on the gift tag
  • One ball band kept from each yarn, or the maker’s page bookmarked

Common questions

What do the symbols on yarn mean?

They are the five ISO 3758 care symbols: a wash tub for washing, a triangle for bleach, a square for drying, an iron for ironing and a circle for dry cleaning. A number or dots show the maximum heat, bars ask for a gentler cycle, and a cross means don’t.

What does a wash tub with one or two lines under it mean?

One bar means a mild machine cycle with less agitation. Two bars mean a very mild cycle, the cycle GINETEX gives as its example for machine-washable wool. The number in the tub is still the maximum temperature.

Can you tumble dry wool yarn?

Not according to the bands in our sample. None of the 28 wool-rich yarns we checked allows tumble drying; 20 say do not tumble dry and 8 don’t mention it. Woolmark says some wool garments can be tumble dried, but only when the care label says so.

What does a circle with P or F mean on yarn?

It’s for professional dry cleaners. P means they may use perchloroethylene or hydrocarbon solvents, and F means hydrocarbons only. A crossed circle means do not dry clean.

What is the best yarn for a washable baby blanket?

Look for a machine wash at 30°C or 40°C and a tumble-dry symbol with a dot. In our sample of 86 UK yarns, 15 list both, 12 of them acrylic, including Stylecraft Special DK, Paintbox Yarns Simply DK and Sirdar Snuggly DK.
