Moss stitch crochet blanket: how much yarn does it take?

A crochet moss stitch blanket in aran takes about 775g of yarn per square metre, which is 17 balls of 100g for a single bed, or 12 to 21 across the patterns we checked. We worked that out from 18 published moss stitch patterns that state a finished size and a yarn quantity; the typical figure rests on six aran and worsted blankets. In those patterns, moss stitch didn’t use noticeably more yarn than the treble and granny blankets in our main blanket guide. Here’s how they compare, and how to start the chain.

The quick answer, by blanket size

Find the size closest to your blanket. The typical figure is the median of the aran and worsted moss blankets we checked. Use the top of the range if you crochet loosely or want a dense fabric. If your pattern states its own quantity, buy what the pattern says.

The table counts 100g balls of aran, and we think it works for DK too, though that’s an assumption rather than a moss measurement. Thicker yarn has fewer metres in each ball, and in our blanket guide DK and aran came out at a similar number of balls: 13 to 19 in DK and 12 to 17 in aran for a single bed, across several stitches. We found only one DK moss blanket that met our rules, The Crochet Swirl’s Moss Stitch Squares Blanket, made of squares that start with treble clusters. At 862g per square metre it sits inside the aran range, but one blanket can’t set a DK range of its own. Sizes match those in our guide to how much yarn a blanket needs. Most of the six patterns behind the table include a border in their quantity; fringe is extra.

100g balls of aran for a moss stitch blanket, by size. Typical uses the median of six aran and worsted moss blankets (775g per m²); the range uses the lowest and highest (564g and 996g). Most of the six include a border; fringe not included. DK assumed similar, from our blanket guide. Compiled 2 October 2026

Where the numbers come from

We opened each pattern page or pattern PDF and noted the finished size, the yarn and the quantity. Then we divided the metres by the area to get metres per square metre, and did the same for grams. Where a designer gave yards, ounces or inches, we converted them. Where a quantity was stated in metres only, we worked out grams from the yarn’s own metres per gram.

Most quantities are what to buy, in whole balls, so they run a little high. Stitching Together and Grace and Yarn state what they actually used. Moogly and Mama In A Stitch scale one design to several sizes, so their rows share a figure. Most of these patterns come from North American designers and yarn brands and are written in US terms. We’ve grouped US worsted with aran, which is an assumption: both sit in Craft Yarn Council category 4, Catherine Crochets says any aran (worsted) yarn will do for her blanket, and Ned & Mimi lists Paintbox Simply Aran as weight 4 and aran. Worsted can run a little finer, as our guide to UK yarn weights explains, so check your tension. We haven’t made these blankets ourselves; the figures are the designers’ own and each pattern is linked below.

Does moss stitch use more yarn?

Not in the patterns we checked, though the comparison is rough. The six aran and worsted moss blankets with a stated weight came out at 564 to 996g per square metre, with a median of 775g. The DK and aran blankets in our main blanket guide, in treble stripes, granny stripes, granny squares, corner-to-corner and ripple, came out at about 600 to 860g. The two ranges overlap. Five of the six moss blankets are North American worsted patterns and the others are mostly UK DK, the designers, yarns and hooks all differ, and every figure is a quantity to buy rather than a weighed blanket. So this shows moss stitch isn’t a yarn-eater, not that it uses exactly the same.

It doesn’t reliably use less either. Catherine Crochets’ Easy Moss Stitch, at 564g, is the lightest of all these DK and aran blankets. Daisy Farm Crafts’ Modern Moss Stitch Blanket, at 996g, is the heaviest, but that figure comes from three 454g skeins and some yarn is probably left over. Stitching Together says moss stitch isn’t as dense as fabric worked all in double crochet (US single crochet), because of the chain spaces. In these quantities, any difference is small next to the spread between patterns.

Thick yarn changes the picture. The four blankets in bulky yarn came out at 626 to 1,293g per square metre. The seven sizes in super bulky and similar yarns, with 52 to 96 metres per 100g, came out at 654 to 1,421g. So a chunky moss blanket often weighs more than an aran one of the same size.

What moss stitch is, and its other names

Crochet moss stitch is a row of double crochet (US single crochet) with one chain between each stitch. On the next row, each double crochet goes into a chain space from the row below, and each chain sits over a stitch. The stitches stagger from row to row, which gives the small woven look.

The names aren’t a UK and US split. Sarah Maker and Stitching Together list moss, linen, granite and woven stitch as names for the same thing. The Crochet Swirl gives the same four names and describes the stitch in UK terms, as double crochet alternating with a chain. Moogly calls it the granite stitch, also known as moss stitch, and The Crochet Crowd calls its blanket a linen stitch blanket. What changes between UK and US patterns is the name of the stitch inside it: double crochet in UK terms, single crochet in US terms. Stitching Together suggests adding the word crochet when you search for these names, so you don’t end up with knitting patterns.

Check it’s the stitch you think it is

Some patterns called moss use a different stitch, and their yarn figures don’t transfer. Lion Brand’s Chunky Moss Stitch Throw / Afghan alternates rows of half treble (US half double crochet) with rows of double crochet worked around the front and back of the stitches. Mama In A Stitch’s Forest Lodge Throw uses an even moss stitch made of half trebles and slip stitches, and Stitching Together’s mossy men’s scarf mixes in a half treble version.

None of these is in our table. Before you use a quantity from a moss pattern, check that it alternates one double crochet (US single crochet) with one chain. Watch the terms too: Bella Coco’s Moss Blanket calls its stitch dc, but describes the UK double crochet, so it is the same moss stitch.

How many chains: an even number

Most moss patterns ask for an even number of chains. Sarah Maker, Stitching Together, Moogly and Catherine Crochets all say so. The Yarnspirations PDFs write it as a multiple of 2 for the two Bernat blankets, and a multiple of 2 plus 2 for the Caron, Patons and Red Heart Moss the Line blankets, which is still even. Mama In A Stitch’s tutorial and The Crochet Crowd’s linen stitch blanket use an odd number instead, so follow the count in your own pattern.

To size a blanket, work out stitches per 10cm from your swatch, multiply by your width in centimetres, divide by 10 and round to an even number. Catherine Crochets gives 14 stitches per 10cm in Special Aran on a 5mm hook, so a 120cm blanket needs about 168. Check what the pattern counts. Caron says its 17 stitches per 4 inches on the Mini Moss Stitch Baby Blanket include the chains, while Daisy Farm Crafts gives 8 stitches per 4 inches in Caron One Pound. The foundation chain calculator does the rounding for you.

Hook size and drape

The Crochet Swirl notes that moss stitch is often worked one or two hook sizes larger than usual, because all the chains can make the fabric dense. Catherine Crochets sometimes goes down half a size for a neater, more compact finish. Both choices change how much yarn a square metre takes.

That’s why a weighed swatch beats any table. Crochet 20 × 20cm of moss stitch in your yarn and hook, weigh it and multiply by 25 to get grams per square metre. A 31g swatch gives 775g, the median above.

Check before you move on

  • Pattern checked: one double crochet (US single crochet) alternating with one chain
  • Finished size decided in centimetres, border taken off the width
  • Swatch measured, and you know whether the tension counts the chains
  • Starting chain rounded to the even number or multiple your pattern gives
  • Pattern’s own quantity used if it states one
  • Border and fringe yarn added on top

Common questions

Does moss stitch use more yarn than treble?

Not by much in the patterns we checked, though it’s a rough comparison. Aran and worsted moss blankets came out at 564 to 996g per square metre, and the treble, granny, corner-to-corner and ripple blankets in our blanket guide at about 600 to 860g. Hook size and yarn move the figure more than the stitch does.

How many balls of yarn for a moss stitch blanket?

For a single-bed size of 120 × 175cm, about 17 balls of 100g aran, and 12 to 21 across the patterns we checked. DK should need a similar number. Catherine Crochets’ Easy Moss Stitch, 120 × 192cm, asks for 13 balls of Stylecraft Special Aran.

How much yarn for a moss stitch baby blanket?

For a 76 × 76cm pram blanket, about 5 balls of 100g aran, with a range of 4 to 6. Red Heart’s Modern Moss Stitch Baby Blanket, 81.5 × 94cm, asks for three 198g balls of Red Heart With Love.

Is moss stitch the same as linen stitch or granite stitch?

In crochet, yes. Sarah Maker, Stitching Together and The Crochet Swirl all list moss, linen, granite and woven stitch as names for the same stitch: double crochet (US single crochet) alternating with one chain.

Do you need an even number of chains for moss stitch?

Usually. Most patterns we checked start with an even number, or a multiple of 2 plus 2. Mama In A Stitch’s tutorial and The Crochet Crowd’s linen stitch blanket use an odd number, so use your pattern’s count.
