Moon phase blankets
Moon phase blanket 2027: UK dates and yarn per colour
A moon phase blanket for 2027 has 49 phases to mark: 13 new moons and 12 each of first quarters, full moons and last quarters. All 49 are listed below in UK time, taken from the US Naval Observatory and checked against NASA’s table. If you give each of the eight phases its own colour, the four in-between colours cover 78 to 81 days each and the four main phases only 12 or 13, so the yarn per colour is far from equal.
Every 2027 moon phase in UK time
Each phase happens at one instant, so the date you crochet depends on your clock. UK clocks go forward on 28 March 2027 and back on 31 October 2027, according to GOV.UK, so times between those dates are in British Summer Time (BST), one hour ahead of UTC. The rest are Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which matches UTC.
Two phases land on a different date in the UK than in UTC. The new moon at 23:51 UTC on 6 April is at 00:51 BST on 7 April, and the full moon at 23:03 UTC on 15 September is at 00:03 BST on 16 September. If you follow a US or worldwide calendar, those two days will look one day early.
January 2027 opens on a waning moon, because the last quarter was on 30 December 2026. August has two new moons, on 2 and 31 August. No month has two full moons in 2027.

Where the dates come from
The times come from the US Naval Observatory’s moon phase data service, which gives them in Universal Time to the minute. We converted them to UK time using the GOV.UK clock change dates. The service lists 49 principal phases in 2027.
We then checked every 2027 phase against the century table of moon phases by Fred Espenak on NASA’s eclipse website. Forty-seven match to the minute. Two differ by one minute: the first quarter on 13 April (22:56 against 22:57 UTC) and the full moon on 15 September (23:03 against 23:04 UTC). Neither change moves the UK date.
How published moon phase designs work
Of the seven published designs in the table, six are pictures of the phases: worked from a chart in tapestry crochet, filet crochet, corner-to-corner (C2C), raised stitches or double knitting, or as a single square. They don’t follow any year, so you can make them in 2027 or any other time. The seventh is a calendar blanket, made like a temperature blanket, where each day gets one row in the colour of that day’s moon.
That calendar design is Arianna Frasca’s Lunar Temperature Blanket, and it is knitted. It uses eight moon phase colours and twelve fine mohair colours for the moon’s zodiac sign. Its tension is 24 rows to 10cm and the throw is 152cm long. By our arithmetic that is about 365 rows (152 × 2.4), one for each day. The pattern lists 96m of each of the eight phase colours for the throw, and 8 × 96m spread over 365 rows is about 2.1m of phase colour a row. We didn’t find a crochet calendar version that publishes its yarn quantities.
Frasca lists the same amount for all eight phase colours. In 2027 the days are far from even, as the next table shows, so check how your pattern assigns colours to days before you buy. The quantities here are the designers’ own, from the Ravelry pages linked at the bottom. We haven’t made these blankets.

How many days each phase colour covers in 2027
The usual eight-colour scheme gives the four main phases a colour each, used only on the day they happen, and four more colours for the days in between: waxing crescent after a new moon, waxing gibbous after a first quarter, waning gibbous after a full moon and waning crescent after a last quarter.
Using UK dates, 2027 has 13 new moon days, 12 days each for the other three main phases, and 78 to 81 days for each of the in-between colours. The runs of in-between days last five to eight days, apart from the four days left at the end of December.
| Colour | Days in 2027 | Metres | 100g balls of Special DK (295m) |

| Waxing crescent | 78 | 780 | 3 |
| First quarter | 12 | 120 | 1 |
| Waxing gibbous | 78 | 780 | 3 |
| Full moon | 12 | 120 | 1 |
| Waning gibbous | 79 | 790 | 3 |
| Last quarter | 12 | 120 | 1 |
| Waning crescent | 81 | 810 | 3 |

Yarn per colour for one row a day
Our temperature blanket guide worked out about 10 metres of DK a row for a blanket around 110cm wide, from two published blankets. At that rate the in-between colours need 780 to 810 metres each, which is three 100g balls of Stylecraft Special DK (295m). The four main phase colours need 120 or 130 metres, so one ball each will do.
That makes 16 balls for the year, against 13 if the yarn were all one colour, because each colour is rounded up to whole balls separately. Each main phase colour leaves more than half a ball over, which you could use for the border.
If you’d rather shade by how much of the moon is lit, the USNO gives the percentage of the moon lit at noon local time for any place. For London in 2027, at noon UK time, it is under 25% on 124 days, 25 to 49% on 60 days, 50 to 74% on 60 days and 75% or more on 121 days. With four shades at 10 metres a row, that is 5, 3, 3 and 5 balls.
Squares instead of rows
A square a day gives 365 squares, and 365 doesn’t make a tidy rectangle. It is 5 × 73, so a near-square layout needs extra or fewer squares: 19 × 19 is 361 and 15 × 25 is 375. Plan what goes in the spare spaces before you start.
Yarn per square depends on the size of the square and the join. Our granny square yarn guide found about 10 metres for a small 7.5cm square without its join, and about 40 metres for a 10cm Attic24 Harmony square once the join and border are shared out. Multiply your own square by the day counts in the table above, then round each colour up to whole balls.
Plan your own year
The moon phase planner on this site uses the same 2027 phase dates. Set your colours and the yarn for one row or square, and it adds up the yarn for each colour. It can also colour each day by how much of the moon is lit at noon in London, in four shades. Weigh one finished row or square first, so the totals use your own tension rather than our estimate.
Check before you move on
- Decide whether you’re following UK time; two 2027 phases fall a day later here than in UTC (7 April and 16 September).
- Choose four colours (by how much is lit) or eight (one per phase) and note which days each covers.
- Crochet and weigh one row or one square before buying.
- Round every colour up to whole balls separately, and buy each colour from one dye lot.
- Start on 1 January with a waning crescent; the first new moon is on 7 January.

Plan my moon blanket ↗Common questions
When are the full moons in 2027 in the UK?
22 January, 20 February, 22 March, 20 April, 20 May, 19 June, 18 July, 17 August, 16 September, 15 October, 14 November and 13 December. The September one is at 23:03 UTC on the 15th, which is 00:03 BST on the 16th.
How many new moons are there in 2027?
Thirteen, with two in August, on the 2nd and the 31st. There are 12 full moons, 12 first quarters and 12 last quarters.
How many colours do I need for a moon phase blanket?
Eight is common, one for each phase. Four shades by how much of the moon is lit also works. With eight, the four main phases each cover only 12 or 13 days in 2027.
How much yarn do I need for a moon phase blanket?
For one row a day in DK about 110cm wide, plan about 3,650m. In eight colours that is 16 balls of 295m: three for each in-between colour and one for each main phase.
